Inns and Hotels
The Alluvian Hotel:
The Alluvian is the premiere hotel in Greenwood Mississippi and my favorite of the places to stay in Greenwood MS.
The Alluvian has small-town, southern hospitality wrapped in a sleek, contemporary big city package. This hotel is owned by Viking Range and was renovated in 2003. It’s name harkens to the Delta region which is an alluvial plain of the Mississippi River.
The lobby of the hotel is polished and modern and the colors in the hallways and rooms are rich jewel tones of reds, purples and golds. Take a look at the artwork in the hotel as it is all by Mississippi artists. We especially enjoyed the artwork with dogs by William Dunlap.
Our friends had a gorgeous suite with the only personal balcony in the hotel which was a perfect place to gather for drinks in the evening. Our King Room was also large and nice. We all agreed that the beds were extremely comfortable, the A/C was icy cold, and the bathrooms were spotless and gleaming.
Besides being an excellent place to stay in Greenwood MS, the Alluvian holds wonderful memories for us because we had a weird and wacky evening here. You know, one of those amazing times that you can never plan and never see coming.
NOTE: Personal story up ahead. Feel free to skip!
The Alluvian has a large gathering area off the entrance lobby which seems to be quite the hang out spot. After our cooking class we joined others in the room and my musical husband noticed that there was a grand piano which, to his horror, no one was playing. This was more than he could stand so he sat down to tickle the ivories. When he stood to go after just a couple of songs the crowd asked him to keep playing.
I promise you never have to twist his arm to keep playing!
Soon the crowd was singing along and calling out requests. After a couple of hours I could tell Kevin was close to exhausting his repertoire. I mean we had sung “Three Times a Lady,” “Come Sail Away,” “Piano Man,” “Easy”…then the audience starting requesting hymns and soon we were singing “I’ll Fly Away” and “I Can Only Imagine” with an entire room full of people many of who might have been just slightly intoxicated.
Only in the south, right?
It was so fun and so special and my husband totally enjoyed being a minor celebrity around town as people would recognize him and thank him for playing everywhere we went the next day.
Chain Hotels
Besides The Alluvian Hotel there are some chain hotels in Greenwood as well. There is a Hampton Inn which gets good reviews on trip advisor and a Holiday Inn Express. You always know what you will get with those types of chains.
Tallahatchie Flats
The Tallahatchie Flats would be an interesting place to check out. These are 6 rustic sharecropper cabins set on the banks of the Tallahatchie River on a cotton plantation. The small homes have actually been acquired from area farms and each one has been given the name of its original location, previous owner or occupant.
You can enjoy the expansive property while you stay at Tallahatchie Flats. At nights it will be quiet except for the sound of the critters or the rain on the tin roof. You can take a walk or fish in the river or play a game of horseshoes.
I’ll warn you that these are basic and rustic digs. But if you are looking for a really old fashioned Delta experience then these might be for you. The cabins vary in size, but they have been updated with heat and A/C and they each have a small kitchen.
